The Majesty of Eastern Canada

How do you excite a bunch of car enthusiasts for their next incentive program? Recently, we were presented with one such challenge. A long-time client presented us with a unique opportunity to showcase our creativity in designing an action-packed program for a group of active participants.

As incentive travel planners, we always search for out-of-the-box ideas to rev up excitement among our “been there, done that” clients.  Traditionally, most incentive programs are centered in one—small or large—geographic area. But we had more exciting ideas. We presented our client with a unique idea. We proposed securing a fleet of electric vehicles for a cross-country exploration of Eastern Canada.

Canada, this vast land of spectacular beauty, can be a blank canvas for exploration by car to discover the majesty of this enormous and awe-inspiring country. The second largest country in the world, Canada spans from the Atlantic to the Pacific and to the Arctic oceans with the longest coastline of any country. There is so much to discover in this pristine land. What follows is a brief itinerary of the most exciting incentive program we were allowed to craft for this privileged group.

Eastern Canada, renowned for its stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture, offers a captivating array of attributes that attract visitors like no other place. This region is a treasure trove of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and cultural diversity. Eastern Canada is a region of unparalleled beauty. Its diverse and rugged landscapes, abundant wildlife, and significant historical sites offer a wealth of experiences for visitors.

The group flew into Toronto, Canada’s largest metropolis. Toronto is ranked by the United Nations as one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. There is just so much to see and to do in this great city. But time did not allow for further exploration of this vibrant city. After an overnight stay at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto, 40 eager participants boarded 20 vehicles early in the morning heading east. Taking the scenic route, the convoy headed to Ottawa, the nation’s capital, as its first destination. The challenge with such an adventure lies partially in making sure there are conveniently located charging stations along the way. The most direct way, just over 400 km, runs along the scenic St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands, passing by the historic City of Kingston—where we had our first pitstop.

It felt we were in Ottawa in no time. Ottawa, Canada’s Federal Capital, is ranked as one of the most beautiful capital cities in the world. While dreadfully cold in winter, Ottawa blossoms into an ocean of tulips in Spring, compliments of the Dutch Government for Canada’s contributions in providing a safe haven for the Dutch royal family during the war. The beauty of this capital city, with its dominant Victorian architecture and majestic parliament buildings, leaves any visitor in awe.

Ottawa is blessed with ample first-rate eateries from the four corners of the world. For our hungry driving teams, in dire need of some carbs, we stopped at La Strada, rated as the best Italian Restaurant in all of Canada. After a sumptuous lunch followed by much-needed coffee, the drivers changed hands, heading out to Montreal—only two hours away.

Montreal was our stop for the group’s second overnight stay. Montreal—this most European city in North America—is a unique blend of historical charm, cultural vibrancy, and modern luxury making it the perfect destination for incentive trips. The city's diverse offerings ensure that there is something for everyone, from historical explorations and culinary adventures to luxurious accommodations and exciting activities. For an authentic Montreal lodging, we picked Auberge du Vieux-Port, a charming hotel in the Old Port area of Montreal, featuring a rooftop bar with stunning views, and cozy facilities with original architectural elements. In Montreal one is assured of being able to experience an enriching and memorable visit.

In this adventure, “Go east, young man” was the operative word. After a restful night, from Montreal, we trek eastward to Quebec City, the capital of the Province of Quebec. Quebec City is a fascinating destination, renowned for its rich history, vibrant culture, and picturesque landscapes. Nestled along the Saint Lawrence River, Quebec City stands as a testament to centuries of architectural grandeur and cultural evolution.

Quebec City deserved more exploration. It is one of the oldest cities in North America, founded in 1608. The city’s historical significance is evident in its well-preserved architecture and its status as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The fortified city walls, the only remaining fortified city walls in North America, offer a glimpse into the city's strategic military importance during the colonial era.

Old Quebec, or Vieux-Québec, is the historic heart of the city. Cobblestone streets, centuries-old buildings, and charming squares make it a living museum. Key landmarks include the Château Frontenac, a grand hotel that dominates the city skyline, and the Place Royale, where the first French settlement was built.

After our tour of the city and dining at one of the most prized dining establishments in Vieux-Quebec, we opted to overnight at a renowned Château Frontenac, a cherished Fairmont property.

It was Day 4 of this cross country exploration. Next destination, Saint John, New Brunswick, 690 km away. To break up the 7+ hour journey, the group had two pit stops at Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec, and Edmundston, New Brunswick. The route was one of the postcard scenes of utter beauty and unspoiled natural landscapes.

Saint John, New Brunswick, stands as a testament to the unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty that defines Maritime Canada. As the largest city in New Brunswick and one of the oldest incorporated cities in Canada, Saint John boasts a rich heritage, diverse attractions, and a vibrant community spirit. Saint John is a city of contrasts and complements, where history meets modernity, and natural beauty coexists with urban vibrancy. Its rich heritage, dynamic cultural scene, and strong community spirit make it a unique and inviting place to visit.

For their overnight stay, we opted for Delta Hotel Saint John for its proximity to the city center venues and eateries. In Saint John, seafood is the name of the game. The group dined to their delight at Billy’s Seafood Company till the wee hours.

We just had one more leg left in this adventure—Halifax, Nova Scotia, just 400 km away. The group seemed restless to get going. With just one pit stop in Moncton, NB, it felt we were in Halifax in no time.

A Coastal gem with rich history and vibrant culture, Halifax, the capital city of the province of Nova Scotia, is a dynamic urban center encircled by natural beauty. With a population of over 400,000, Halifax stands as the largest city in the Atlantic provinces. Halifax is renowned for its unique blend of rich history, cultural diversity, and stunning coastal landscapes.

After this triumphant marathon, it was time to feast on some world-renowned lobster at the famed Five Fishermen Restaurant. Soon after, the group found itself at the Halifax International Airport heading home, and with that a milestone adventure came to an end.

The multi-leg adventure took a total of 5 days and many memorable pitstops along the way, where the participants were able to immerse themselves in many unique cultures in a vastly changing landscape.

It is not very often that a client gives us a proverbial carte blanche when it comes to the design of an adventure-packed incentive program. From the feedback we received from the participants, this would rank as one of the most memorable trips anyone had taken—and enumerable Instagram postings to prove it.
